Every year, the National Testing Agency conducts the UGC NET, or National Eligibility Test (NTA), to identify potential candidates for the renowned Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor positions at central universities and colleges.

Given the fact that the exam is difficult and category-oriented, more than a million students attempt it each year.

However, there is no quick way to explain the full exam process, and presenting you to the entire UGC NET spectrum at once can hamper your progress. As a result, I’ll take you through every part of the exam one by one.

So, if you are one of the candidates, or if you are uncertain and want to learn more about the exam, you have come to the proper place.

The National Eligibility Test (NET) commonly referred to as UGC NET or NTA UGC NET Exam, started in the year 1989-90, is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for 81 different subjects.

First, let me start by introducing the organisations.

UGC (University Grants Commission) was established in 1956 as a statutory body by the Indian Government. Its objectives were to coordinate, determine and maintain the standards of higher education.

While, NTA (an Indian Government Agency) was established in November 2017 to conduct entrance examinations for institutes of higher education, nationwide.

The UGC NET exam was previously administered by the CBSE, however it is now administered by the NTA beginning in December 2018. It is usually held twice a year (in June and December), with over 5 lakh pupils taking part in each cycle.

The aim of the exam is to see if you are qualified to apply for Assistant Professor (AP) positions and/or the Junior Research Fellowship grant (JRF).

Now, let’s talk about the JRF a little more. It is a letter given to candidates who scored higher or equal to the JRF cut-offs in their NET exams for their respective subjects. The JRF letter is a bearer document that allows you to apply for a scholarship while pursuing your M.Phil. or Ph.D.
