The juvenile rehabilitation programs provide an effective transformation of offenders. If the rehabilitation gets started in the early years of child offending, it increases the chance that the child will not commit the same again.

In this article, we will break down how, according to juvenile age range and the circumstances, a child may commit the offense of Truancy.

Age Group 6 to 10 years

A child between the age of 6 to 10 years gets considered less mature in their thinking. The reason is that they are still growing and learning to be in their surroundings. Hence there is a higher probability that parents are responsible for their child committing Truancy. Missing ten or more of the school days without any valid reason is a severe case of Truancy. A child between 6 to 10 years gets considered a truant for the below primary reasons:

  • Parents are overprotective of their children, causing them to forego their rights to education.

Parents who do not trust their children or have faced trauma in such a way fear for their children’s lives and do not send them to school. Instead, they remove their child from school without informing the authorities, leading the child to be truant.

Age Group 11 to 16 years

  • Facing a bully in the school

After repeated warnings and educational counseling, some kids resort to bullying and cause harm not just physically but also mentally on other students. As a reflex in fear, kids prefer to miss school than facing the bully. If bullying is a reason for a truancy offense below can be considered

  • Speak to the child and their parent
  • Offer protection to the child
  • Ensure the school premises is well aware and protective of the abused child
  • There must be a counselor for both the victim and the bully.
  • Poor Grades

When it is results time, students who fair well can be seen smiling and moving around the school campus. But if a child is repeatedly scoring less in the exams and gets poor grades, there can be an underlying reason for the same that causes the child to be a truant. The very reason that the child doesn’t wish to be made fun of at school hence misses school without informing anyone.

  • Mental Health issues.

Mental health issues may arise from any situation—for example, abusive parents, neighbors, siblings, step-parents or guardians, or even relatives. It adds mental health issues to the child who finds himself/herself alone in such grief and may find ways not to face more authoritative figures such as teachers, principals, and seniors at school. A child who has been mentally abused needs counseling and separation from the toxic environment. The class teacher, neighbors, and friends must inform the responsible authorities about the child’s mental health due to abusive relations.

  • Lagging in school work

Repeated school grades, unable to finish work on time, and constantly being behind in schoolwork are why kids do not wish to attend school. There can be several reasons for a child lagging in school work. But scolding and punishing must not be the way out from this. Drugs can be accessible to kids if parents, teachers, and guardians do not pay close attention to their behavior and friend circle once addicted children skip school to consume drugs and be with another addicted group of children and adults. Some of these kids may end up as serious criminals when they grow up.

Hence there needs to be proper care for children who commit Truancy due to the use of drugs.

  • Having drugs at any age is a crime.
  • Children must be counseled and must be under strict protection when they are guilty of drug abuse and truancy.
  • There must create a strict clean environment for the child provided by the court in the case.
  • The child should be removed from parental care if the parents are drug abusers and cannot take care of the child leading them to fall prey to the same habits as them.
  • The school must set up a meeting with the parents to plan the child’s development and career path to divert their attention from toxic substances.
  • Being Lonely

Finding no friends at school can add mental discomfort to a child. They might self analyze themselves and feel guilty about themselves for not sticking to a group of friends or any best friends. However, there can be a foundation within the school where children who feel lonely can register themselves and speak like students who feel the same.
