making processed sugar

Following are the step-by-step processes of making processed sugar from scratch.

Farmers generally harvest these sugar cane and sugar beets mechanically from their farms. Before placing them onto the trucks and transporting them to the factory for processing, they tend to filter all plant materials to eliminate dirt and pebbles.

  • Initial Preparation and Washing

You need to clean sugar beets or sugar cane thoroughly as soon as they arrive at the facility. Washing might take place on water-sprayed belts or in water-filled flues. The washing stations mostly comprise of spinning drums. The product spins within the drum while spraying with water and scraping against its own to remove dirt.

After the washing process, you need to attach or tie these sugar beets or sugar canes inside the machine. Swing-hammer rippers or strongly grooved crusher rollers grind the sugar cane. After that, they make slices of sugar beets by using cassettes, which are slicing machines.

Before slicing, they cleanse these cassettes with hot water tanks and then, spray the hot water over the crushed sugar cane.

  • Extraction of Juice harvesting grapes

The manufacturers push those sugar cassettes into the bottom of the tank. The size of the tank ranges from ten to twenty meters. After the extraction of sugar, a revolving shaft in the middle carries the sugar beet slices upwards against the downward stream of water.

You need to perform the process of milling in order to obtain the juice from sugar cane. The sugar cane fibers are compressed in a sequence of five mills, which separate the juice from the sugarcane, which can be utilized as a fuel source later. The juice is dark green in hue, acidic and murky at first.

  • Juice purification

To cleanse and brighten the color of the cane juice, tall towers of 10 to 20 meters are employed. The juice is injected at the top of the tower, and at the bottom, sulfur dioxide vapor is delivered. Sulfidation is the process through which sulfur dioxide climbs through the tower. The juice is boiled to disintegrate the protein content before being combined with calcium hydroxide slurry known as milk of lime.

This process can also include the addition of carbon dioxide gas bubbles to lessen the alkalinity and precipitate the carbonated slurry, which is then filtered to cleanse the juice. Typically, the clarifying procedure takes several hours.

Then, you can easily remove the sludge from the bottom of the tank, and the juice from the top. To recover any leftover sugar from the sludge, you can perform the filtration process again. This generates mud, which you may utilize to fertilize farms in the future.

  • Crystallization

In the next step, the manufacturers tend to utilize a single-stage vacuum pan to vaporize the. The nuclei in the liquid are little sugar grains that help draw sugar out of the solution and transform it into crystals. As the mixture boils in a vacuum pan, water evaporates, and sugar crystals build, resulting in massecuite, a thick combination of syrup and sugar crystals.

  • Centrifugation

You need to place a metal cylindrical basket with several holes in the centrifuge, which spins at 1,000 to 2,800 revolutions per minute. The molasses go through the centrifuge bucket. The centrifuge bucket drags them to the centrifuge’s exterior where it is delivered to storage tanks during centrifugation.

  • Packaging and drying

In massive hot air dryers, you need to dehydrate these wet sugar crystals to a water content of as low as 0.02 percent. In a granulator, you should toss the sugar softly through the warm air.

These vibrating screens separate the dry crystals into different sizes, which you can store in containers subsequently.

However, processed sugars are widely used worldwide but due to the dozens of purification steps involved, these sweeteners lack nutrients and can be harmful to the health.

That’s why health professionals high recommend using natural sweeteners as an alternative. As I also consume and prefer nature, therefore I try to mention a few benefits of unprocessed sugar that can motivate you towards consuming only unprocessed sugar daily.

What are the benefits of unprocessed sugar and what basically it is?

Unprocessed sugar can refer to a range of slightly treated sugar canes that differ significantly from artificial table sugar and other varieties of refined sugar often used in baking and sweetening.

However, you need to extract it as early as possible as many manufacturers tend to refine every sugar granule to some extent. According to a survey report, this raw sugar is famous as slightly refined sugar. You can produce molasses after extracting sugar from the sugar beets or cane sugar. Thus, if molasses remain in the sugar, you can label it as raw or natural sugar.

Health Benefits of unprocessed sugar

  • Enhancer of Energy

Because the healthiest unprocessed sugar has a low glycemic index, it plays an important role in keeping a healthy body. Generally, people consume it by drinking sugarcane juice, which is easily available in fresh form. It gives the body glucose, which it stores as glycogen. When the body requires energy, it consumes this stored glycogen. Unprocessed sugar also contains carbs, which give the body quick energy and refreshment. As a result, unprocessed raw sugar is a true energy enhancer.

  • Disease Retardant

This raw sugar can help you avoid infections, including the common cold, sore throat, and flu. Raw sugar is quite beneficial to dehydrated persons. This sugar is safe to consume on a daily basis since it is alkaline in nature. Many people use it to replace fizzy drinks.
