I am myself… The good and the bad , and all the awful!

The place I (Maurice Roussety) was born was Mauritius. I was three years old of age, wearing full leg braces, suffering from polio when my father passed away, after a grueling three years in a wheelchair, disabled by a stroke. My mother was a beautiful young lady was confront with the daunting task of raising two of my sister and my. While the life in Mauritius was not easy for me, it was also moments of joy.

I still have vivid and cherished images of soccer games with pals on the dirt road that was just close to our house, getting chosen school captain three times in consecutive years. I was also the captain of the team to a historic inter-school win and, of course, the unending and unconditional love and devotion of my mom and two sisters.

When I was in school I was consistently in one of the best five classes. Academic achievement was an extremely crucial goal in my home country because it was considered the key to an improved life for the family.

Roussety would always study hard and was able to achieve. I was always happy to see the smiles on the faces of my family members, not necessarily the congratulation or the diploma that the school’s headmaster handed me. I was required to be a hard worker and I had to be successful and outdo myself just as my mom was doing for her children. With everything going on around me, I subconsciously I assumed the position as my father.

I was now entrust to complete all the things my father would have done had the time come for him to be alive. I was always creative, entrepreneurial in my work, building, or fixing anything.

Since at the age of nine I made sling shots from leftover strips of elastic bands left over from mum’s sewing machines, and then built small sailing vessels made of dust pans that had long handles made from old oil cans , and offered them to local shopkeepers and my school buddies for a few shillings.

Which would have gone a long way to school supplies, but not enough to purchase the elusive soccer shoe which was constantly on my wish wish list. In my earlier childhood, there was a lot in hospital trips for Maurice Roussety. Ranging from acute asthma attacks, diphtheria and gangrenous infections and being allowed to survive after swallowing a 2-cent coin, I was soon recognize in an area hospital.

At the age of 13, my mom took the bold step to Australia. I went to Chandler High school, a small school that was located that was located in Noble Park. I spoke very little English and spoke with a powerful French accent and was a soccer player (rather as Aussie rules) with a dark complexion and dressed in a different way. Was larger than the average 13-year-old.

What… Was that the reaction I received from my classmates and teachers? In the early days the era of immigrants, they were rare and infrequent at the very the very least, within Chandler High. I was never the same in school and never truly accepted. There were times when I wanted to end the whole thing.

Maurice then built an impressive consulting business. I went on to study Economics as well as Commerce. I and went on my Masters degrees as well as an Ph.D. However, my accomplishments have taught me nothing about life and its complexities.

The most important lessons I learned came later in life , when my world was shattered. Fell into an unforgiving pit and reached the bottom of the mountain, perhaps some meters below. I lost everything – my family and my reputation, as well as my money, and my desire to continue. What do you know, I have dug deep, pulled myself out of the dark hole, and am now digging into the business of life. I would like the chance to share more with you.

• Accommodation and travel
